How to Scan Documents on iPhone
Short answer
To scan a document on iPhone, open PlainCopy, tap Scan, and hold the phone over the page: the edges are found and the page is captured on its own. Tap Save, check the page, and tap Save again. The scan is a PDF in your Files, named from its merchant and type, at about 400 KB a page. Scanning and exporting are free.

How Do I Scan a Document on iPhone?
Three steps, about ten seconds for a one-page letter.
- 1Open PlainCopy and tap Scan.
- 2Hold the phone over the page. The edges are found and the page is captured. For more pages, keep going.
- 3Tap Save in the scanner. PlainCopy opens the page editor, where you can check the crop and filter. Tap Save again, and the scan is a PDF in your library.
Can I Scan Several Pages into One PDF?
Yes. Keep scanning and every page joins the same document. In the pages view you can reorder, rotate or delete pages, and add more later with Add Page. Each page gets its own crop and filter.
| Setting | Per A4 page | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Small | About 200 KB | Forms, receipts, email limits |
| Standard (default) | About 400 KB | Most documents |
| Best | About 1.3 MB | Photos, fine print, archiving |
How Do I Make the Scan Look Clean?
New pages use the B&W filter, which gives flat white paper and dark text. Original, Auto, Color, Grayscale and Photo are one tap away. Clean Up removes shadows and uneven light, Adjust sets brightness and contrast, and Crop lets you fix the corners by hand.
Can I Make a PDF from Photos I Already Took?
Yes. Tap Import in the library to pick photos from Photos or files from Files, and they become pages. In the Shortcuts app, the action Make a PDF from Photos does the same from any shortcut, so turning a JPG into a PDF is one tap.
How Do I Send the Scan?
Tap Share. Pick PDF or JPG, the size, and where it goes: Files, Email (the document name becomes the subject) or any app in the share sheet. Pro adds Send To, which sends to a folder, Paperless-ngx, WebDAV or email in one tap.
Where Is the Scan Saved?
In the Files app, under iCloud Drive › PlainCopy, or On My iPhone › PlainCopy if iCloud Drive is off for the app. It is a plain PDF with the same name you see in PlainCopy, so it opens anywhere and survives a new phone.
